The Meaning Behind Ocean-Inspired Jewelry Grows with Everyday Wear

Oct 14

Ocean-inspired jewelry has been around for as long as people have loved the water, and most of what gets written about it starts at the very top: diamond fish, enameled sailfish, coral carved by master hands. Those pieces are beautiful, and most of them are made for occasions. We think an ocean piece gets its meaning from being worn, like the silver turtle you touch on a Tuesday while you wait for a call to connect.

Why ocean-inspired jewelry means more when you wear it daily

Most write-ups about high-end ocean jewelry stick to the stones and the setting work. That’s fair, since those pieces are valued for their rarity and usually saved for special evenings. What they rarely cover is what a piece means to the woman who wears it.

That comes from wearing it often. A pendant on an everyday chain is with you on the commute and through a long meeting, and it’s still on during a walk by the water. You picked it for a reason, and each time you touch it, you remember why.

Every SeaKolors piece is .925 sterling silver, handcrafted in Bali and finished by hand, so no two come out exactly alike. Gold has its place. Silver is easy to wear every day, and after a while you stop noticing it’s there, which is usually how a piece ends up worn for years.

What each sea animal symbolizes in jewelry

Each creature in our sea life collection comes with a few words of its own. The real animals behind them are worth knowing too.

Sea turtle

Loggerheads roam entire oceans and still come back to nest on the stretch of coast where they hatched. A team at the University of North Carolina tracked nests in Florida for 19 years and found evidence that the turtles recognize home by its magnetic signature. We hold the turtle for wisdom, navigation and longevity. There’s a men’s version too, a mini turtle pendant on a leather cord.

Starfish

Sea stars regrow lost arms. A NOAA expedition photographed one on a deep-sea seamount with four of its 11 arms growing back. On our site the starfish stands for renewal, healing and resilience.

Dolphin

Joy, harmony and protection. Bottlenose dolphins travel and hunt together in pods and pick up feeding tricks from one another. A typical nursery pod runs 5 to 20 mothers and calves, though gatherings of 1,000 or more do happen.

One of our customers bought a dolphin bracelet during a stressful stretch at work. She wanted the reminder to play more and keep work and fun in balance, and she mentioned that she liked the color, too.

Jellyfish

Jellies have been drifting through open water for at least 500 million years without a brain as we’d recognize one. A 2017 study found that the upside-down jellyfish sleeps anyway. And not all of it is drifting: jellies were the first animals known to swim using muscles. We hold the jellyfish for grace, flow and adaptability.

Seahorse

A seahorse pair can court for hours or even days before the female passes over her eggs, and then the male carries the young and gives birth. With courtship that slow, patience is an easy fit. The seahorse also carries contentment and peace.

What makes a piece of jewelry meaningful

Our customers do praise the craftsmanship in their reviews. The parts that stay with you, though, are about what happened while they wore the piece.

One customer has worn SeaKolors pieces for several years and loves how they make her feel. Another bought a long chain for her pendant, then came back for a shorter one so it would sit right with different necklines, which tells you that pendant was going out with more than one outfit.

Gemstones work the same way. Our bracelet kolors are sorted by mood and Intention, so you shop by what you want the bracelet to remind you of. Whichever piece you buy, 11% of the purchase goes toward protecting sea life and ocean ecosystems.

When an heirloom piece means more than everyday silver

There is a fair case on the other side. A gold heirloom brooch that only comes out for weddings can carry enormous meaning, because it carries a family with it: the grandmother who wore it first, the vows it has seen. Meaning that passes between generations is real, and rarity can help it last.

Silver asks something of you, too. Worn daily, it darkens over time and wants a gentle clean now and then. And no animal hands you its meaning on its own. A turtle on a chain is a lovely turtle until you decide what it’s there to remind you of.

How to choose sea life jewelry with meaning

Read the words attached to each animal and pick the set that fits what’s going on in your life. Someone in the middle of a big change might lean toward the turtle or the starfish. Someone buried in work might want the dolphin, the way our customer did.

Then think about how often you’ll actually wear it. A mini pendant on an 18-inch chain is easier to keep on all day than a large pendant on a 24-inch one.

If an animal isn’t quite your language, our soulful pendants carry words like Peace and Love, and the sea goddess collection is there for women drawn to Goddess imagery.
